Ginger Goodin, Director of TTI’s Transportation Policy Research Center, on June 22 helped to lead a broad discussion of policy issues that may be central in shaping the federal government’s role in the development of automated and connected vehicles. The event – “The road ahead: Developing policies to make connected and automated vehicles a reality” – was hosted in Washington, D.C. by Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-IL). Goodin represented the Transportation Research Board, offering the panel what Congressman Lipinski described as an objective and balanced perspective that helped to bring together the various viewpoints being discussed.
Connected and automated vehicles have the potential to revolutionize how Americans travel. Their successful development and deployment, however, depend largely on the formation of a regulatory framework that promotes innovations and provides a measure of certainty for companies planning sizeable long-term investments. With that in mind, the roundtable’s participants focused on identifying relevant policy issues and working toward collaborative solutions. Specific discussion topics included technology deployment, research and development, infrastructure requirements, regulatory matters, and cybersecurity.
In addition to Goodin, other panelists included representatives from NHTSA, U.S. DOT, General Motors, and AT&T.
